Year 11 Students Swap Roles with their Teachers

A spot of role reversal took place at Macclesfield High School recently when two of our Y11 students, Poppy Wilkinson and Lucy Warne, taught an English lesson to the Headteacher, staff and governors, based on a Write4Kicks Creative Writing Residential course they had attended during August.  This week-long course, held at Bath Spa, was open to students from all over the country who had a flair and passion for writing.  Both students described the course as a “remarkable experience”.

The students started their presentation with an overview of the course itself.  This is what they had to say.

“We both had a fantastic time during the summer when we attended a creative writing residential called Write4Kicks held at a boarding school in Bath Spa.  We were able to experience a new and exciting approach to creative writing that has really extended and complemented our understanding of the GCSE syllabus.

The workshops themselves consisted of subjects such as journalism, novel writing, publishing and applied terra-forming (ie. we worked in groups to create our own world).  The friends we made were absolutely brilliant and as a group we all got on extremely well.  It was interesting to share ideas with people who shared our same passion for writing and we found ourselves being very inspired by them.

On the last day, we got the opportunity to meet Jack Thorne, who wrote episodes for the hit Channel 4 programmes “Skins” and “Shameless” and the highly acclaimed writer Fay Weldon.  Upon returning we found ourselves much keener to write and excited about the possibility of sharing our experiences and knowledge with others”.

The students informed staff about individual workshops they had attended including:

  • Applied Terra-forming (creating a fictional world);
  • the process of writing a novel from conception to production;
  • poetry;
  • journalism as a career; and
  • writing for TV.
