Macclesfield High School Boys Under 19s table tennis team had a great win against the odds last Saturday in the Butterfly English Schools Team Championships North West Zonal Finals held at St Bede’s Sports College, Blackburn.

Due to unavoidable circumstances the team had to travel one player short but the 3 players – Richard Hague, Chris Pattison and Scott Bradley – played magnificently all day to emerge as tournament winners.
The first match against King George V College, Southport was a tense 4 all draw with the Southport number one, a Lancashire County player, narrowly defeating both Richard and Chris. The team now had to beat Lancaster Royal Grammar to qualify and subsequently stormed to a 6-2 win.
Scott Bradley deserves special praise, not only for being undefeated all day but winning two tense matches to take us through as group winners after Lancaster defeated Southport.
The Boys now go on to the semi finals of the competition within the next two weeks when they will face teams from St. Mary's College, Hull, East Yorkshire and The Perse School, Cambridge. Hopefully they will have their eyes set on reaching the National Final at Hinckley at the beginning of March.
