Christine Tacon, who runs the Co-op Farming Division, visited Macclesfield High School recently to talk to Year 9 students during Fair Trade Fortnight.
She spoke to the students about the Coop’s role regarding fair trade and the work they are doing to improve communities across South America and Africa. Christine explained to the group that Fair Trade means that
farmers in these Third World countries are guaranteed the cost of producing their crop plus a small premium to help them invest in their community’s health care and education. Students learnt that by simply buying Fair Trade products, they would be helping farmers and their families in these countries to achieve a better standard of living.
Christine’s talk was inspirational and clearly had an impact on Macclesfield High School’s students! Many of them were keen to talk about all the Fair Trade products they had bought which already included T-shirts, coffee, chocolate and orange juice. Following the talk, Year 9 students were determined to buy a wider variety of Fair Trade products.
Christine brought in Fair Trade Easter Eggs from the Coop which were given out to the two students who asked the most interesting questions. It was a difficult choice to make as so many students asked questions which challenged Christine’s considerable knowledge on the topic. However, Callum Sykes and Tom Mayer were chosen and are pictured above with Christin Tacon.
