As usual, Macclesfield High School’s Annual Music Concert held in December was, simply, outstanding! Tickets sold out so quickly that parents and students have asked for there to be two performances next year! The ticket sales and the proceeds of a retiring silver collection have been passed to the East Cheshire Hospice.
Students really excelled themselves. There were 140 students involved in the choir alone! There were some outstanding individual performances, by some talented musicians and other young people who were performing publicly for the first time in their lives. The School boasts an exceedingly superb array of talent.
The range of pieces was remarkable. The Samba Band opened the concert and put everyone in the mood with a rousing and ear-splitting number! This was followed by flute ensembles, piano solos, a trumpet duet, brass and string pieces, the school orchestra, the choir and senior choir and solo vocalists. Resident rock bands included talented guitarists and drummers.

The array of music on offer was vast from traditional Christmas Carols, to classical and contemporary pieces. Examples included a group of three students on classical guitars playing Sarabande by Debussy; the Sonata in B Minor by Handel was a flute solo; and one student sang her own composition. The Concert Finale was Bohemian Rhapsody comprising the school orchestra, choir and senior choir. There really was “something for everyone” and many parents said how impressed they were with the concert, the huge array of talent and the variety of pieces performed.
One visitor commented as follows: “May I congratulate your students for their excellent performances which we thoroughly enjoyed and which made a wonderful start to the festive season. You have many talented people at your school who must be an inspiration to everyone. I was most impressed in the way that your Music Department encouraged students of ALL abilities to participate and they were all made to feel so special and proud of their school; also the goodwill feeling between staff and pupils. We can appreciate how much hard work was put in by everyone.”
The concert was, as always, a team effort by the music staff, the music technician and three sixth formers who operated the lights and sound and worked hard back stage.

All proceeds from the concert have been donated to East Cheshire Hospice. This amount was added to the collection made in the staff room at Macclesfield High School where colleagues contributed to ECH instead of spending money on Christmas cards to each other. In total, about £1295 was handed over to East Cheshire Hospice.
