Macclesfield High School Has Top Student In The World!

World Maths Day is to be held on 4th March.  Due to all the different time zones, it runs for 48 hours from 11 am on 3rd March to 11 am on 5th March.  Total registrations for this day are now above the million mark, currently at 1,031,083.  This includes 28,501 schools from a total of 231 countries.

The Challenge is to answer as many mental arithmetic questions as correctly as possible.  In 2007, the inaugural World Maths Day, the global total was 38,904,275.  In 2008 it soared to 182,445,169.  The students play against each other in mental arithmetic games.  Students are captivated by the fact that they are playing in real time.  Each game lasts for 60 seconds and students can play as many games as they wish.  The questions are appropriately levelled for different ages and abilities.
This is a truly unique world event and a fantastic way to promote numeracy within schools.  New Zealand Prime Minister, John Key, will officially launch the competition on 4th March.  Participants range from Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, Bangladesh, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, the USA and the UK to name but a few.

February was practice month and the top student in the world for her age group was Macclesfield High School Year 10 student, Viktoria Suranovska.  Macclesfield High School had another three students in the top 50:  Hayden Bebbington (5th), Dominic Noble (38th) and James Kelly (43rd).  Congratulations to them all!  Hayden also won an iPod Touch for the best worldwide daily score on 19th February of 45,936 points.  He was the first of only two British students to win so far.

Macclesfield High School is looking forward to further success on World Maths Day.
