World Book Day was celebrated in swashbuckling fashion at Macclesfield High School last Wednesday when Justin Somper, author of the Vampirates series of books, came in to talk to Year 7. The visit, courtesy of Waterstones in Macclesfield, gave students the opportunity to ask questions about his books, his inspiration and his methods as an author. Some Year 7 students were also able to meet Justin for a chat about their reading habits before the main presentation. He made some excellent book recommendations too, which students have promised to follow-up!
The two-hour session was full of insights into Justin Somper’s award-winning world of pirate ships and vampires on the high seas. Students found out how he came up with names for his characters and that it had taken him five years of research before he felt able to start writing his first book.
Students left the hall – many of them with precious signed copies of his new book, Black Heart – full of praise for the author. He, in turn, was complementary about the students, saying that they were “very engaged” and that they asked original and interesting questions.
The event was the climax of a week-long celebration of World Book Day at Macclesfield High School. Now many students will be reading Black Heart as the first book in their “Readathon” challenge!
