A Whole School Assembly was held at Macclesfield High School in order to present the Willmott Dixon Cup to the House with the most House Points.  This is an annual event and staff and students were delighted to welcome Mr Guy Lacey of Willmott Dixon (builders of the school on the award-winning Macclesfield Learning Zone) to present the Willmott Dixon Cup to the winning House.  The result, as always, was close but Silk House was presented with the Cup which was extremely well-deserved.

The Whole School Assembly was a celebration of the students’ successes and highlights of the year, of which there were many.  Students collectively earned a staggering 140,000 house points, which is a true recognition and acknowledgement from the staff of the students’ efforts in everything they do.   At least 20 students earned 500 or more House Points.  Last year there was only one.  MHS has seen an increase in points awarded to students who have represented the school be it in sport, music, drama or as ambassadors of the school.  Many students also earned points for their achievements outside of school.

  • For Mulberry – Sami Oakes appeared on our TV screens after winning a place to ‘Escape from Scorpion Island’. Sami spent 3 weeks in Australia facing some extremely difficult challenges. Yes, she did escape and was the proud team leader of the winning team.
  • For Hovis –  Katie Burgess entered Britain’s Got Talent and Sabrina Khan and Emma Ainscow made presentations when standing for Cheshire East Youth Mayor.
  • For SilkLucy Coppack worked tirelessly as a Sports Ambassador, organising events and promoting sports for primary schools in Macclesfield and surrounding areas.

  This year students raised more than £4,500 for charity.  Macclesfield High School held two separate charity weeks to raise money for a national and a local charity. Children in Need was the school’s national charity and they sent school an official thank you as it was among the top fundraising schools in the country.
Students raised an amazing £1293.61 for their nominated local charity, Crossroads, which supports Young Carers.  Representatives from the Charity attended the House Cup Assembly and students were able to hand over their donation.
Macclesfield High School Students  have also supported:

  • Wrong Trousers Day – part of the Wallace and Gromit Children’s foundation;
  • Jeans for Genes – which cares for children with genetic disorders; and
  • Brake Bright Day – which supports Road Safety awareness.

Throughout the year students have supported Operation Wallacea to raise money for their forthcoming conservation trip to Indonesia.  This trip will provide these lucky Y11 students with a life-changing experience.
On top of this students filled over 150 shoe boxes for the Rotary Shoe Box Appeal – donating toys and books to children less fortunate than themselves.

There have been many competitions too.  Several are mentioned below.

The Equal Opportunities Competition invited all students of the Learning Zone to participate.  Several MHS students were glad they had a go especially when they received financial prizes of £50, £20 and £10.  The judges commented on the high standard of work submitted from MHS.

World Maths Day is an annual competition in which many MHS students excelled.  The school had a record number of entries, record scores and record house points.  Viktoria Suranovsky, Hayden Bebbington and James Kelly appeared on the World Leader Board.

The FA (Fantastic Attendance) Cup and FA Vase brought out the inter form competitiveness.  The FA Cup winning students each received a £5 gift voucher of their choice.  The FA Vase winning students each received £2 on their lunch cards.  This competition also resulted in improved attendance.

Just before Christmas students with no detentions and good attendance were rewarded with a trip to either the Trafford Centre for some retail therapy or to The Chill Factor to enjoy an afternoon on the snow be it skiing or tubing.  Another Reward trip is planned for late June / early July to Alton towers or Waterworld for those students with good attendance and punctuality, and, of course, no detentions!

This was the last assembly for Year 11 students and House Captains and Form Captains were presented with a certificate and gift of appreciation for all their efforts and commitment over the year.

Headteacher, Ged Ward, said: “Whilst only one House can receive the Cup, I am sure you will agree that there are no winners and losers here.  All the students are winners for participating so enthusiastically in all the many opportunities that Macclesfield High School has to offer them.  I hope you have enjoyed reading about the huge variety of events which our students have been involved in this year.  Only a selection is mentioned here”.
