Year 7 students at Macclesfield High School have been demonstrating how environmentally aware they are. On the 5th of November, all students brought in an audit they had completed on their own homes and were asked to make a pledge to help the environment. Here are some examples:

A group of Year 7 in Food Technology made an environmentally friendly fruit salad and then in Geography they worked out just how many food miles are actually involved in transporting fruit around the world. The results of this investigation are detailed below.
Left: Alexander Freke-Morin Right: Christopher Jackson & Harry Gunter
The typical fresh fruit salad from a nationwide supermarket chain travelled over 72,000km from farm to fridge. Most of the food miles would have been by air or sea which are reckoned to be 5 times worse for the environment than food miles done on the road.
The world’s circumference is only 40,000km. This meant all our food miles would have equalled a trip that would have gone around the world 1¾ times!!!
The fresh fruit salad that was bought from either local or UK producers only added up to 870km. This was over 83 times less than the fresh fruit salad above.
Ten students interviewed Mr Ward, the Headteacher, and Mrs Weare, the School Bursar, on Monday and asked them some hard-hitting questions about what they were doing to make the school more environmentally friendly. The School will be announcing the results of this in a podcast to be shown on the LCD screens in school.
It has been a brilliant week and Macclesfield High School will continue working towards helping the planet in the months and years to come.
