Year 7


Assessment:

Students are assessed each half term. Assessments are completed in the three key areas of the English Curriculum: reading, writing and speaking & listening.

NC Levels: Most students are expected to achieve at least a level 5 in English by the end of Key Stage 3 and have progressed by at least one level on Key Stage 2.

Content of Course:

Students study poetry, a drama text, non-fiction and media texts. They will also read a novel in class and complete written pieces in a range of forms and styles. Students will take part in various speaking and listening activities throughout the year.

Year 8


Assessment:

Year 9


Assessment:

On-going assessment in the key areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening takes place each half-term. Students also sit a mock SATs exam before Christmas. The KS3 SATs take place in May.

English

Syllabus: AQA Spec A GCSE

English Language - Students are assessed via two exams. Paper 1 - Media Texts and Writing (30%). Paper 2 - Poetry and Writing (30%).

English Literature - Students are assessed via one exam.

Coursework:

English Language - Students work on four units which are all entered for the exam (20%0. There is a compulsory Speaking and listening component consisting of 3 oral presentations (20%).

English Literature - Students work on 3 units which are all entered for the exam (30%).

Content of Course:

English Language - In Year 10 students complete 3 pieces of written coursework and one piece in Year 11. Exam preparation takes place throughout the 2 years.

English Literature - In Year 10 students complete 2 pieces of coursework and 1 piece in Year 11. In Year 11 students study a novel and poetry, as well as preparing for the exam.

  • Entry Level Certificate in English (AQA)
  • Certificate in Literacy - 3 Levels.

  • Basic Literacy Skills.
  • Students build a folder of class based work to be entered for the examination. Students are also assessed by the end of unit test.
